Kona is looking for a very special adopter! Poor Kona was rescued from a breeder/hoarding situation where he lived primarily in a kennel/run for the majority of his life. Now he is learning that the world is a big place, he is understandably terrified. He needs a very patient adopter who will give him time to come out of his shell and who will help show him the world can be a good place!
Kona is an absolutely gorgeous 8-year-old purebred Standard Poodle. He currently weighs 45 pounds and could benefit from gaining a few more. He is sweet, soft, and gentle. Though he is scared of everything, he is not aggressive with his fear at all. He is submissive and compliant. He accepts petting and handling, though he will not seek it out yet. He is housetrained and (so far) doesn't bark much.
Kona will do best with another calm, confident dog (or multiple dogs) in the home so he can follow their lead on things like going outside, coming back in the house, and following their person around. He has lived with dogs in his foster home and gets along with them well. He is too scared and shut down for playtime right now, but hopefully as he gains confidence, he can bond with everyone, canine and human, in his new home. He could do well with older children. Younger children's behaviors could be too erratic and scary to him so no homes with young kids, please. Everyone in the family will need to be willing to give him the time and space he needs to feel comfortable.
His adopter will need to be willing to have a large crate with a comfy bed in the home for him to retreat to whenever things gets too overwhelming for him. In addition, Kona will need a very secure backyard and everyone in the home who need to be vigilant about closing doors and gates. He is a flight risk during this scary time where he is unsure of his surroundings.
On a positive note, Kona loves to go for walks. He does pull a bit on his leash, but takes his cues from the other dogs so hopefully this will correct itself in time. He is getting more confident on his walks every day. As with gates and doors, his walker will need to be very intentional and vigilant while they are out and about - any surprise loud noise will scare him and he could try to bolt.
We are hoping there is a very special and patient person or family out there who is willing to bring Kona into their home and give him the love that he has missed out on all these years. It may take some time to show it, but Kona will be forever grateful to them for taking a chance on him.
Kona's adoption fee is $700 and includes his already completed neuter surgery, up to date vaccinations, and a microchip.
